![]() I thoroughly recommend this Ludwig snare drum to anyone on the market looking to upgrade to a versatile, well-balanced snare drum that sounds fantastic across most musical genres. The drum’s incredible sound is also matched by an unbelievable price. This drum accommodates 10 beautiful looking tube-lugs as well as matching die-cast hoops. It has a lot of vintage depth tuned low and it really pops tuned up high. This snare drum suits every tuning range, all the way from low to high. The Black Magic snare drum produces a warm, round metallic tone and also has a hefty amount of body thanks to the 8” of shell depth, with the brass shell offering a lot of weight and attack. Ludwig pioneered the black-nickel over brass shell in the 1920s and set an unchallenged benchmark in quality. This fantastic drum brings the same signature sound and quality as its bigger brother- the iconic ‘black beauty’. It has been built to deliver tight, crisp projection with a huge full-bodied attack. Everything about this drum is sensational. If you’re looking for something that fits the bill for your band, the Gretsch USA Bell Brass snare is a great option.Īnother one of my top recommended snare drums is the superb Ludwig Black Magic Brass Snare Drum with a powerful 8” of shell depth. However, the die-cast hoops also add extra weight to the already heavy brass shell. ![]() ![]() I’m personally a huge fan of die-cast hoops, as they offer excellent tuning stability and a better tone compared to triple flanged hoops. You can hear the snares very clearly when playing the lightest of notes, making this a great tool for playing grooves with a heavy inclusion of ghost notes. The snare drum comes with a set of 42-strand snare wires, and those do a great job of boosting the sensitivity. This combination gives you a powerful snare drum with an impressively wide tuning range. However, this particular brass snare also has a strong low end. You get all the classic tonal qualities that you’d expect from a brass snare drum, including cutting bite, piercing brightness, and plenty of sensitivity. The main feature of the Gretsch Drums USA Bell Brass Snare Drum is its 3mm brass shell. If you want to add a luxurious snare drum to your collection, it’s well worth looking at. Then I applied some reverb to the snare, kick and toms using the plugin "Ambience" by Magnus Smartelectronix (which is free, by the way. Not only do I have control over all the sounds, I can master each component individually. So what I did is separate each component into its own midi track and combine the drumkits to create a mighty "hybrid" kit. I like the snare from the Heavy kit, but I also want the kick drum from East Bay, the crash cymbals from Smash, etc etc etc. They each have bits and pieces that sound good but none sound good as a whole IMO. So the drumkits that come with Garageband are ok. ![]()
